UNDERGRADUATE COURSES

BACHELOR IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

The Bachelor in International Relations of the University of São Paulo is a multidisciplinary course offered by the Institute of International Relations and departments of International Law, at the Law School, Economics and Business at the School of Economics and Business, and Political Science, History and Sociology at the School of Philosophy, Languages and Social Sciences. It aims at preparing first-class specialists in the field of International Relations to act in various segments of the professional market.
The Undergraduate Program is a four years course built upon four groups of courses:

1) Core courses, made up of 18 mandatory courses;

2) Advanced courses in International Relations, made up of three mandatory courses;

3) Elective courses, taken at the Departments of Political Science, History, International Law, Economics and Sociology .

4) Free courses taken at any Department of USP or at Brazilian or foreign institutions with which the Institution of International Relations or the University of São Paulo have academic exchange agreements.

GRADUATE PROGRAM

Graduate Program in International Relations
The Graduate Program in International Relations of University of São Paulo grants Masters and PHD degrees and aims at training high-level academic researchers and professionals to work at institutions that demand specialized knowledge in international relations, such as international organizations, higher education institutions, diplomatic service or other governmental agencies, private enterprises as well as civil society organizations.

The USP Institute of Internacional Relations gathers together scholars from different academic backgrounds, such as international law, international relations, political science, international economics and history, allowing for a strong multidisciplinary approach of the international issues.

Sub-fields of Research
International Political Economy (IPE)
Dedicated to the study of themes in the interface between international political and economic processes. Covers topics such as the role of institutions and players in the
analysis of foreign policy and diplomacy; international trade and international finance; international negotiations and bilateral relations, regional and multilateral.

Research topics:
* Diplomatic relations and international negotiations,
* Trade and international finance,
* Foreign policy analysis: insitutions, players and comparative processes.

Global Governance and Normative Issues in International Relations
Dedicated to the study of the different dimensions of global governance. Entails topics on substantive aspects of global governance (human rights, trade and finance, security and environment), theoretical and normative aspects of the international agenda, contemporary trends of international law and relations between domestic and international norms.

Research topics:

Admission
Candidates that have completed an undergraduate course, regardless of the academic field, are eligible for admission in the Master’s course. Foreign students, after being approved in the selection process, should obtain official recognition of their undergraduate certificate.

Candidates will be selected on the basis of the following information:
a) English proficiency test (TOEFL or equivalent)*. Proficiency in English is a requirement for admission;
b) curriculum vitae;
c) research project;
d) Graduate Record Examinations - GRE test.

Candidates holding an undergraduate or Master degrees can apply for admission in the PHD course, regardless of the academic area. In both cases foreign students, when admitted should obtain official recognition of their certificate.

Candidates will be selected on the basis of the following information:
a) English proficiency test (TOEFL or equivalent). Proficiency in English is a requirement for admission;
b) curriculum vitae;
c) research project;
d) Graduate Record Examinations - GRE test.
e) Copy of the Master´s dissertation or equivalent;

Documents Required for Application:

- copy of the diploma or higher education course conclusion certificate. In the absence of a diploma, copy of the conclusion certificate.
- curriculum vitae (Brazilian candidates, preferably in the CNPq`s Lattes format);
- copy of the identity card and of the CPF ( for Brazilian candidates);
- copy of the RNE (foreigner’s identity card) or passport (for foreigners only);
- copy of the electoral card (Brazilian candidates);
- copy of the military service status certificate, when applicable (Brazilian candidates);
- copy of the Master´s diploma;
- copy of the transcript of the Masters grades;

Foreign Language Proficiency Test
Master candidates should be proficient in the English language, having obtained the following minimum scores:
- Foreign language proficiency test conducted by CL – Language Center of FFLCH-USP – minimum score of 6.0;
- TOEFL – Paper-based Test – minimum score of 533 points;
- TOEFL – Computer-based Test – minimum score of 200 points;
- TOEFL – Internet-based Test – minimum score of 72 points;
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System), with minimum score of 6.0 points.

PHD candidates should be proficient in the English, having obtained the following minimum scores:
- Foreign language proficiency test conducted by the Language Center of FFLCH-USP – minimum score of 7.0;
- TOEFL – Paper-based Test – minimum score of 550 points;
- TOEFL – Computer-based Test – minimum score of 213 points;
- TOEFL – Internet-based Test – minimum score of 79 points;
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System), with minimum score of 7.0 points.

Candidates that have complete undergraduate education in an English speaking country or in a English speaking course will be exempted from the English language proficiency exam, both for the Masters and for the Doctoral course.

Prior to qualifying exam, foreign students should demonstrate proficiency in the Portuguese language by means of a test conducted by the Language Center of FFLCH-USP or submitting the Portuguese Language Proficiency Certificate for Foreigners - CELPE-Bras, developed and granted by the Ministry of Education (MEC). The examinations of CELPE-Bras are held in the form of a single exam and information is available on the website of the Ministry at (www.mec.gov/sesu/celpe).
All certificates should be valid for no more than five years.

Guidelines for The Research Project:
The research project should contain:
- presentation of the topic and justification of its relevance;
- analysis of the bibliography;
- clear definition of the research problem and of the research hypotheses;
- methodological procedures.

Candidates Selection:
Applications will be evaluated by an Examination Board formed by IRI´s scholars, appointed by the Graduate and Research Committee (CPGPq-IRI).

The the research project is eliminatory. Only students that attain a score of 7.0 in this item may continue taking part in the selective process.
The GRE exam will be classificatory.
The candidate will be approved if he or she obtains a minimum final score of seven (7.0) in the joint evaluation of the project, the resume and the GRE test.
